This article proposes public health as a model framework in which to study the field of violence against women (VAW).
Abstract
A public health model is described as having the potential to serve as the shared paradigm that Carol Jordan called for in her review which offered a compelling argument for how to advance the field of VAW research through the creation of a new science. In this advancement, the goal is to increase awareness of the benefits of a public health framework for addressing VAW and facilitate a field of VAW researchers focused on a shared end goal, prevention of VAW. Argument is made for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to be the lead public health agency placing them in a unique position to assist in advancing the field similar to the way Jordan proposes with her idea to create a science of VAW. Public health is an ideal framework in which to study VAW, given the magnitude of the problem, the fact that it has many health-related impacts, and the fact that one of the strengths of the public health model is that it is multidisciplinary and involves several separate and diverse fields of scientific expertise.
