These 19 papers present the perspectives of authorities in health law, ethics, and clinical research regarding the issues that AIDS poses for the health care institutions and workers and recommends measures for preparing and supporting the system in caring for HIV-infected people.
Abstract
The discussions consider such issues as the ethical duty to treat persons with AIDS, the risk of HIV transmission to health care workers, and whether or not a person's HIV status should be kept confidential. Other papers consider whether all hospital patients should be routinely tested for HIV, whether research policies should be modified to make unapproved treatments more readily available, whether facilities should be built that are designed exclusively for people with AIDS, and how financing and reimbursement systems should be structured to cope with the costs of care for people with HIV-related diseases.
