Directed mainly to correctional personnel working for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, this training videotape explains the nature and transmission of AIDS and gives instructions on appropriate precautions on and off the job to reduce the risk of AIDS transmission.
Abstract
The discussion emphasizes that the close quarters in which inmates and correctional staff live and work results in frequent physical contact and therefore the need for measures to reduce the risks of exposure. It explains the nature and symptoms of AIDS and the test for the virus that causes AIDS. It notes that AIDS is transmitted through blood or sexual contact and that transmission can occurs through drug or tattoo needles or transfusions, but not as a result of casual contact. Correctional personnel are advised to protect themselves on the job by avoiding sharp objects in searches and shakedowns, washing their hands after coming into contact with another's body fluids, using disposable gloves when in contact with blood, disinfecting surfaces with blood on them, and promptly reporting puncture injuries to the supervisor or the medical department. The policy of the Federal Bureau of Prisons regarding inmate AIDS testing and isolation is also presented.
