The 1999 annual report of the Alaska court system profiles court activities for the year and presents statistical summaries of court filings, dispositions, and cases pending.
Abstract
The profile of the court system indicates four levels: supreme court, court of appeals, superior court, and district court. Rules governing the administration of all courts and rules of practice and procedure for civil and criminal cases are promulgated by the supreme court. In 1999, the court system had a total of 57 judges, 60 magistrates, 59 court locations, and 726 authorized personnel. The number of cases filed in trial courts totaled 156,212, a 5.4- percent increase over 1998. The number of cases remained relatively constant in superior courts. The jurisdiction of Alaska's courts is detailed, and major activities, programs, and innovations of trial courts are described. Statistical summaries of filings, dispositions, and cases are presented by type of court. Planned improvements to the court system are noted that focus on the changing justice environment, the need for rapid and detailed information about court case characteristics, and court delay.
