Information from 87 low-income and 92 medium-income Greek families formed the basis of an analysis of the socioeconomic factors affecting parents' alcohol and cigarette consumption and the father's aggressiveness toward other family members.
Abstract
The first group consisted of 87 of the 301 families receiving financial aid through the social welfare system in Iraklion city. The control group consisted of 92 families living next door to families in the first group; these families had higher annual incomes and better living conditions. All families shared the same religious beliefs. Data were collected by means of a 20-minute questionnaire filled out at home by a team of experienced researchers. Results revealed that the father's alcohol consumption correlated positively with his smoking and aggressive behavior, while the mother's alcohol consumption correlated positively with her smoking and number of marriages and negatively with the family's overcrowding index. Furthermore, the father's smoking correlated positively with his alcohol consumption; the mother's smoking correlated positively with her alcohol consumption and tenancy. Finally, the father's aggressiveness was positively related to his alcohol consumption and negatively to his work and level of education.
