DISCUSSION OF THE INAPPROPRIATENESS OF PROCESSING ALCOHOLICS THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE GENERAL SCOPE OF ALCOHOLISM AS A NATIONAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL PROBLEM IS REVIEWED. THE PROBLEMS POSED BY THE ENTRANCE OF THE PUBLIC DRUNK, THE DRUNK DRIVER, AND THOSE WHO HAVE PERPETRATED ALCOHOL-RELATED FELONIES INTO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS ARE EXAMINED. ALTERNATIVE DETOXIFICATION AND AFTERCARE PROGRAMS ALREADY OPERATING ARE DESCRIBED. THE FUTURE OF ALCOHOLIC TREATMENT IS BRIEFLY ASSESSED. A TABLE OF ARREST TRENDS, 1970-1971 FROM THE FBI UNIFORM CRIME REPORT IS INCLUDED TO ALLOW CONSIDERATION OF ALCOHOL-RELATED OFFENSES IN RELATION TO ALL ARRESTS.
