Abstract
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990. This law mandates the elimination of discrimination against disabled persons in employment and public accommodations. Congress failed to consider the impact this law would have on criminal justice agencies. Attempts to create an exemption for law enforcement have not been successful. Law enforcement agencies therefore must comply with the ADA. This publication is a collection of works that address the requirements of the ADA and the implications for law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities. The emphasis is on employment and training concerns as well as the need to ensure access to activities and services for staff, visitors, the public and inmates with disabilities. Among the practical materials provided to assist agencies in complying are tests for establishing the essential duties of a police officer and for evaluating the ability of an officer or recruit whose physical ability to do the job is in question.
