This report highlights past and present San Diego Police Department practices and services, noting modern crime prevention and analysis functions, narcotics and traffic law enforcement duties, recordkeeping and personnel services, and vice unit activities as well.
Abstract
It includes a pictorial essay of the department from 1889-1960 and a look at departmental changes from 1920-1980, including the expansion of the woman's role in law enforcement, civil disturbances and their effects on department policies, and the department's response to the crash of 'Flight 182' in 1978. The department currently has a hostage negotiation unit, a school task force, a child abuse team, an arson strike team, a crime lab, a court liaison function, and other units. It also offers disaster planning and inhouse psychological services. Photographs of each officer, administrator, and civilian staff member are included and police social functions illustrated. No tables are presented.
