TWO PARELLEL PROJECTS DESIGNED TO INCREASE AND IMPROVE THE USE OF COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEMS TO LOCATE AND IDENTIFY STOLEN PROPERTY ITEMS BEARING IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS.
Abstract
A PROPERTY IDENTIFICATION MANUAL IS BEING PREPARED AND WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO 2500 LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO DEVELOP REFERENCE GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMIZATION OF SUCH SERIAL NUMBER USE. A FIELD INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED AT 25 SELECTED SITES TO IDENTIFY CURRENT LAW ENFORCEMENT PRACTICES AND PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE INVESTIGATIVE USE OF SERIAL NUMBERS IN CONNECTION WITH ARTICLE FILE PROPERTY. THE PRACTICES AND PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED THUS FAR ARE DISCUSSED IN THIS PAPER. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
