The New York City Criminal Justice Agency, Inc. (CJA) presents its 2011 Annual Report on the Adult Court Case Processing of Juvenile Offenders in New York City.
Abstract
The report covers the period of January through December 2011 (the second half of fiscal year 2011 and the first half of fiscal year 2012). The report presents data on selected characteristics of juvenile defendants who were arrested for serious crimes during the reporting period; and it provides information on court activity for these cases in New York City's Criminal Court (lower) and Supreme Court (upper). This report also provides data on the number and types of arrests, as well as disposition and release-status decisions. This information provides policymakers with an understanding of the types of offenses attributed to juveniles and of the routine system responses. In addition, the report assists in the development of intervention strategies, either for limiting pretrial detention or the use of alternative sanctions. The data are presented in seven sections: Arrest; Criminal Court arraignment; Criminal Court disposition; Supreme Court first appearance; Supreme Court disposition; Supreme Court sentence; and failure-to-appear (FTA) rates. This information is presented first with graphic displays (exhibits), which use percentages, and then with tables, which contain detailed numbers and percentages that relate to a specific exhibit. Several improvements are noted in the methodology used to prepare data for this report series. Appended data on juvenile offenses
