This booklet describes the development, functions, and arbitration rules of the General Arbitration Council of the Textile Industry (GAC), a division of the American Arbitration Association (AAA).
Abstract
Arbitration has many advantages for the textile industry. Technical expertise is needed to reach decisions in disputes, a speedy resolution of the conflict is important, and the privacy of arbitration proceedings protects both parties. The booklet traces the GAC's history from its beginnings in 1930 under the Cotton Textile Institute to its inclusion in the AAA in 1964. The GAC's constituent sponsors continue to be the same 15 trade associations, and it has a panel of approximately 1,200 arbitrators drawn from 20 branches of the textile and apparel industries. The booklet gives the GAC membership and its recommended standard clause for contracts, purchase orders, and confirmation of order forms. GAC arbitration rules are set forth under the following categories: submission of existing disputes to arbitration in the absence of a prior agreement to arbitrate, how to initiate arbitration, selection of the arbitrator, the arbitration hearing, the award, and the arbitrator's responsibilities. Educational activities sponsored by the GAC are described.
