This special issue presents a series of articles on research into the assessment and treatment of sex offenders.
Abstract
One article challenges frequently cited papers on the apparent failure of treatment efforts for sex offenders. Another article reports on California's experimental treatment outcome study that provides follow-up data on 299 sex offenders who had been released from custody at the time of the study. An overview of a British national program for the assessment and treatment of sex offenders in the prison system is followed by a discussion of the development reliability, and validity of an inventory for the multidimensional assessment of sex and aggression. Barbee and his colleagues report on a study of the typological differentiation of rapists' sexual arousal patterns. Another article reports for the first time on a relatively noninvasive, easily administered screening procedure for identifying men at risk for molesting children. Remaining articles discuss the role of deviant sexual arousal in juvenile sexual offending and distinguishing rapists from non-sex offenders with the use of phallometric measures. 2 references
