IN THE LIGHT OF GROWING DISSATISFACTION WITH TRADITIONAL METHODS OF EMPLOYEE EVALUATION FOR PROMOTION, THE AUTHORS REVIEW THE ASSESSMENT CENTER CONCEPT.
Abstract
AN ASSESSMENT CENTER IS A COMPREHENSIVE, STANDARDIZED PROGRAM IN WHICH PARTICIPANTS ARE SYSTEMATICALLY OBSERVED OVER ONE OR TWO DAYS AND EVALUATED FOR ANY OF A VARIETY OF PURPOSES, INCLUDING SELECTION, PROMOTION, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING NEEDS, AND SUPERVISORY OR MANAGERIAL POTENTIAL. TRAINED ASSESSORS OBSERVE AND RATE EACH PARTICIPANT'S PERFORMANCE IN A NUMBER OF JOB-RELATED GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL EXERCISES AND RELATE THIS PERFORMANCE TO PREDEFINED DIMENSIONS OR TRAITS CHARACTERIZING A SPECIFIC JOB. OBSERVATIONAL TECHNIQUES SUCH AS SITUATIONAL EXCERCISES, IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS, OBJECTIVE JOB KNOWLEDGE TESTS, AND PEER RATINGS, AMONG OTHERS, ARE EMPLOYED. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATION OF THE PROFESSIONAL POLICE REGISTRY AND ASSESSMENT SERVICE ASSESSMENT CENTERS, OPERATED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE.
