This report is based on data obtained from the first 200 issues of Australian Prison Trends, which has been published monthly by the Australian Institute of Criminology since May 1976 through January 1993.
Abstract
Data are presented as a time-series for each jurisdiction, with imprisonment rates (daily average number of inmates per 100,000 adult and total population), Aboriginal rates, and remand rates revised to reflect the latest estimated resident population data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. For each jurisdiction, data are presented in two sections for each month. The first section shows the daily average number of persons in custody during the month, with changes in the totals over the past month and over the past year, imprisonment rates, and number of sentenced inmates received during the month. The second section shows the number of inmates in custody on the first day of the month, together with the number of inmates who committed federal offenses against Commonwealth legislation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates, and inmates on remand included in the total. Supplementary data for each jurisdiction are provided in tables at the end of each section, and graphs of imprisonment rates and remand rates for each jurisdiction are provided in the appendix. 31 tables and supplementary appended data
