This census related to all persons on remand or serving sentences at any gazetted prison for adult offenders, operated or administered by State/Territory correctional agencies, at midnight on 30 June, 1982, and included persons temporarily absent from such establishments but under the authority of correctional agencies.
Abstract
The information collected in the census is of three basic types: general information on the demographic and social characteristics of the prisoner; information on the legal status of the prisoners, including the nature of the offenses or charges for which the person is in prison; and details of the sentence being served. Results are presented in tabulations representing summary tables by sex and jurisdiction, cross-tabulations by most serious offense, and interstate comparisons of legal status and sentence length. Appenixes contain the data collection form and additional tabulations. The bulk of the document is in tabular form.
