SYSTEM DESIGNED BY LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT TO FACILITATE RETRIEVAL OF INFORMATION ON SUSPECTS AND THEIR VEHICLES.
Abstract
THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT CONCEIVED, DEVELOPED, AND IMPLEMENTED THE AUTOMATED FIELD INTERVIEW SYSTEM TO ASSIST INVESTIGATIVE AND PATROL PERSONNEL TO RETRIEVE QUICKLY PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION DATA ON SUSPECTS. AN OFFICER USING A FIELD INTERVIEW CARD, TO RECORD CONTACTS BETWEEN OFFICERS AND PERSONS ENCOUNTERED IN THE FIELD, PLACES A PIECE OF CARBON PAPER BEHIND THE TOP CARD TO CREATE A COPY OF THE INFORMATION. THE ORIGINAL IS FORWARDED TO THE AUTOMATED VEHICLE FIELD INTERVIEW UNIT, WHILE THE DUPLICATE CARD IS RETAINED IN THE GEOGRAPHICAL DIVISION OF OCCURRENCE. THE CARD PROVIDES THE OFFICER WITH A CHECKLIST OF COMMON VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS CODED WITH A NUMERIC VALUE WHICH CAN BE EASILY LOCATED ON A SORTING MACHINE. REQUESTS FOR RETRIEVAL OF INFORMATION ARE HANDLED BY MEMBERS OF THE AUTOMATED VEHICLE FIELD INTERVIEW UNIT IN RESPONSE TO INQUIRIES OF DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL AND OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
