This pamphlet presents guidelines to prepare women for the legal and medical procedures which follow the reporting of rape and sexual assault in Maryland.
Abstract
It provides instructions for preserving evidence and describes the initial police response to the report. The hospital examination is discussed both as a means of collecting evidence and as it relates to the treatment of injury, possible pregnancy and venereal disease, and the victim's psychological reaction to the assault. Subsequent police procedures, such as indepth interviews and polygraph testing, are outlined. Court procedures and the victim's role in them are described, including bail, the preliminary hearing, the grand jury, arraignment, the pretrial conference and motions, the trial, sentencing, and appeal.
