The Basic Management Orientation Course of New York City's Police Academy provides newly promoted sergeants with the necessary management concepts and techniques needed to perform their roles effectively.
Abstract
The course covers supervisory concepts and practices, legal issues for supervisors, administrative duties, basic responsibilities, motivation, and expanded roles of police officers under community policing. The course is divided into three phases. The first phase consists of 3 weeks of classroom training at the Police Academy and 1 week of precinct orientation. Classroom training includes lectures and workshops conducted by field personnel, subject matter experts, and Police Academy staff. The second and third phases consist of tasks performed by probationary sergeants while assigned to a command. The course has segments dealing with internal affairs, civilian complaint investigation, inspections, equal employment, health services, drug awareness, and employee assistance and counseling. Supervisory skill training is also covered in terms of leadership, mentoring, conflict resolution, human relations, report writing, public speaking, and drill and ceremony. Other course segments focus on desk officer duties, computer operations, problem-solving, resource utilization, community organizing, legal issues, disorder control, crime scene procedures, emergency services, bomb squad procedures, hazardous materials, victims, line of duty injury reports, vehicle pursuit, missing persons, discipline, nonlethal weapons training, and employee management.
