Violence against women is a crime that has been ignored by the criminal justice rehabilitative apparatus. This study examines the role of treatment as a criminal justice policy to reduce domestic violence and describes how a domestic violence seminar, Batterers Anonymous (BA), can be implemented in correctional education.
Abstract
A sample of 166 arrested spouse abusers, who were court-ordered to attend BA sessions, was examined in terms of recidivism. Although the overall success rate was nearly 80 percent after 18 months of observation, the sessions worked less well for intensively violent men experiencing romantic crises. The BA seminar consists of 10, 2-hour sessions which are outlined in this article. The program can be implemented into correctional education by developing a sympathetic inmate constituency and establishing program goals to eliminate the physical and emotional abuse of women. 3 tables, 1 figure, 28 references, and 1 appendix (Author abstract modified)
