This videotape and accompanying manual are designed for use by police officers to introduce parents, caregivers, and concerned citizens to the benefits and dangers of using the Internet and to explain online threats in the larger context of children’s safety.
Abstract
The videotape presents discussions among parents and children regarding the use of the Internet and safety issues. The videotape highlights children’s ease in using the Internet, focuses on parents concerns abut their children’s safety when online, and describes how the Internet can be used to exploit children. The videotape also explains the actions that law enforcement agencies are taking to address the problem. The videotape includes five separate units on the following topics: (1) disclosing information, (2) going places, (3) monitoring use, (4) staying connected with children and adolescents, and (5) maintaining perspective about child safety. The manual explains that people online may not be who they say they are, that almost any Internet search can lead to pornography or other undesirable content, that blocking and filtering programs may help parents control children’s access to certain kinds of information, and that parents should not assume that their teenagers over age 15 need no supervision on the Internet.
