Abstract
THIS BOOK DEALS WITH A VARIETY OF URBAN POLICE ACTIVITIES INCLUDING POLICE ROLES, ORGANIZATION OF THE POLICE FORCE, THE STRAINS ASSOCATED WITH POLICE WORK, AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE PUBLIC. THE AUTHOR, A FORMER MEMBER OF THE NEW YORK CITY POLICE FORCE, EXPLORES SEVERAL DIFFERENT THEMES. DISCUSSED IS THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S TRANSITION FROM BUREAUCRACY TO PROFESSIONALISM AND FROM ORDER TO ANOMIE. ALSO DESCRIBED IS THE CHANGE FROM IDEALISM TO CYNICISM THAT THE INDIVIDUAL POLICEMAN UNDERGOES. THE RESULTS OF A RESEARCH STUDY ON POLICE CYNICISM IS INCLUDED IN THE APPENDIX.
