This document presents annotated bibliographic entries on future trends in terrorism.
Abstract
The dominant trend discussed in this literature was the increasing likelihood that terrorists would use weapons of mass destruction, particularly against the United States. Many of the 295 articles and monographs discussed the potential threats of nuclear, biological, and chemical terrorism. Also discussed were the countermeasures that needed to be implemented in responding to these future threats. Some articles discussed the emerging threat of computer or cyberterrorism and the potential threat to the country’s information-technology based infrastructure. Many articles discussed new technologies to counter more conventional terrorist threats, such as detecting bombs at airports. The bibliography was organized into six geographic areas -- Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America -- as well as a general International section. Most entries were listed under the International and North America sections. The bibliographic research focused on English-language sources; however, there were a few foreign-language items included. All entries have keywords.
