This article describe an apparent hoax perpetrated by Signature Products Corporation, an ammunition manufacturer.
Abstract
In late 1994, the news media reported that Signature Products had applied for a license from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to produce Black Rhino ammunition, purportedly able to penetrate a bullet-resistant vest and then suddenly turn frangible and virtually explode on contact with soft flesh. Generally, however, bullets are either hard enough to penetrate armor or have a soft or hollow point and a design that produces a mushrooming effect that allows them to pierce the human body. Signature Products, in response to criticism about the Black Rhino bullet's capabilities, announced it had delayed production. This article compares the publicity over Black Rhino to previous scares over so- called Teflon cop-killer bullets and plastic guns.
