A FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF THE REVOLT THAT STARTED ON SEPTEMBER 9, 1971 AT ATTICA STATE PRISON IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR, A BLACK MUSLIM MINISTER AND HEAD OF THE REVOLTING INMATES' INTERNAL SECURITY DURING THE TAKEOVER, DESCRIBES INMATE GRIEVANCES AND PRISON CONDITIONS THAT HE CONTENDS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UPRISING. THE INMATES' ACTIONS AND RATIONALES DURING THE RIOT ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR PRESENTS ARGUMENTS SUGGESTING THAT ALL THE HOSTAGES WHO WERE KILLED WERE KILLED BY STATE TROOPERS AND SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES WHO WERE CALLED IN TO QUELL THE RIOT. RETALIATORY AND PUNITIVE MEASURES TAKEN BY THE AUTHORITIES SUBSEQUENT TO THE RIOT ARE DESCRIBED.
