DISCUSSION OF A RESEARCH PROGRAM DESIGNED TO DEVELOP REPORTS, GUIDELINES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR JUDGING THE VULNERABILITY OF EXTERIOR DOORS TO BREAKING AND ENTERING.
Abstract
A 'THREAT ANALYSIS' STUDY REVEALED TWO MAJOR CLASSIFICATIONS OF ENTRY (UNSKILLED, AND SEMI-SKILLED) WHICH ARE DIVIDED INTO HIGH AND LOW LEVELS OF ATTACK. THIS PROGRAM IDENTIFIED 14 MAJOR METHODS OF ATTACK, INCLUDING KICKING, JIMMYING, AND SPREADING THE DOOR FRAME WITH A CAR JACK. A NUMBER OF TESTS WERE DEVISED TO DETERMINE WHETHER A DOOR AND THE SURROUNDING FRAME AND WALL ASSEMBLY COULD WITHSTAND SUCH ATTACKS. A DRAFT STANDARD HAS BEEN DRAWN UP BY RESEARCHERS WHICH SPECIFIES THAT MINIMUM-STRENGTH DOORS SHOULD RESIST AN IMPACT OF TWO BLOWS AT 80 JOULES (59 FOOT-POUNDS) AND A SPREADING OR JIMMYING FORCE OF 6,670 NEWTONS (1500 POUNDS).
