BURGLARY INTERCEPT UNIT, USING PLAIN CLOTHES, SPOT MAPS, COMPUTER DATA, AND KNOWLEDGE OF PSYCHOLOGY, REDUCED HOME AND BUSINESS BURGLARY RATE BY 16 PERCENT IN 1973.
Abstract
THE SIZE AND POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS OF BATON ROUGE, TOGETHER WITH AN INCREASE IN BURGLARIES, WARRANTED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SPECIAL UNIT TO PREVENT AND SOLVE BURGLARIES OF BUSINESSES AND HOMES. USING SUITABLE PLAIN CLOTHES, COMPUTER DATA, AND A KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY, A UNIT OF TEN MEN UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A SERGEANT, CONDUCT SURVEILLANCE AND INVESTIGATIONS. SINCE THE INSTITUTION OF THE UNIT, THERE HAS BEEN A DECREASE OF 16 PERCENT IN THE BURGLARY RATE AND A 100 PERCENT CONVICTION RATE. THE UNIT HAS ALSO BEEN SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED IN RAPE AND ROBBERY CASES.
