DESCRIPTION OF THE SAN FRANCISCO POLICE DEPARTMENT'S COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM.
Abstract
PROJECT CABLE, BEGUN IN 1970, PROVIDES COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION IN THE AREAS OF FIELD SUPPORT, CRIMINAL HISTORY, ALLOCATION OF PERSONNEL RESOURCES, PERSONNEL RECORDS, INCIDENT - ACCIDENT REPORTING, RECORDS MANAGEMENT AND COMPUTER ASSISTED COMMAND AND CONTROL. DISCUSSION OF THE OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM DETAILS THE INTERFACING OF PROJECT CABLE COMPUTERS WITH EXTERNAL INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS ON REGIONAL, STATE AND FEDERAL LEVELS. SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THIS SYSTEM, INFORMATION FROM POLICE DEPARTMENTS ALL OVER THE STATE (OR THE NATION) CAN BE SUMMARIZED AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD OFFICER MAKING THE INQUIRY IN LESS THAN ONE MINUTE. UTILIZATION OF THE CABLE SYSTEM HAS PROVED INSTRUMENTAL IN INCREASING THE NUMBER OF FELONY AND MISDEMEANOR ARRESTS, INCLUDING PERSONS WANTED FOR ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY ON SERIOUS CRIMINAL CHARGES.
