Abstract
Currently, there are eight operating substance abuse treatment and recovery service programs supported by the California Department of Corrections under its Office of Substance Abuse Programs. During fiscal year 1996-97, the programs provided substance abuse treatment and recovery services to more than 3,700 program participants at a cost of approximately $14.3 million. Participants in most of the programs consist of men and women who volunteer for the program while in custody or on parole. The eight programs provide community-based substance abuse services to male and female offenders in 15 counties, representing 77 percent of the parolees under supervision in the State. More 80 community-based substance abuse treatment and recovery service providers are contracted to provide treatment services through the eight programs. This report provides a description, evaluation results, and costs for each of the eight programs. Information is also provided on substance abuse training for correctional staff, as well as expansion of the substance abuse treatment program. A budget summary and a discussion of unmet needs are also included.
