DISCUSSES REHABILITATION PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE LIVING UNIT PROGRAM, RELAXING OF MAIL CENSORSHIP, INMATE COMMITTEES, PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, AND PRE-RELEASE WORK PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE MAJOR REHABILITATION EFFORT RECENTLY IMPLEMENTED IS THE LIVING UNIT PROGRAM. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM ARE IMPROVED RELATIONS BETWEEN STAFF AND INMATES, INCREASED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INMATE, SHARED PARTICIPATION IN PLANNING PROGRAMS, AND A LIVING SITUATION THAT CAN ENHANCE TREATMENT. THE HEART OF THE PROGRAM IS THE LIVING UNIT OFFICER, WHO IS HIGHLY TRAINED TO INTERACT WITH THE INMATES IN DEALING WITH PERSONAL PROBLEMS AND REHABILITATION NEEDS. OTHER MEMBERS OF THE STAFF ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SECURITY AND ORDER.
