THIS REPORT ATTEMPTS TO DESCRIBE QUANTITATIVELY THE FLOW OF OFFENDERS THROUGH THE TOTAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN CANADA.
Abstract
THE PRESENT PAPER, USING A SYSTEMIC APPROACH TO THE CANADIAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, PRESENTS FIGURES ON THE FLOWS OF OFFENDERS FROM THE POLICE SUBSYSTEM THROUGH THE CORRECTIONS SUBSYSTEM INCLUDING NUMBER OF OFFENSES REPORTED, NUMBER OF CHARGES MADE BY POLICE, NUMBER OF CHARGES BROUGHT TO COURT, NUMBER OF CONVICTIONS, AND NUMBER OF INCARCERATIONS. A COMPARISON IS MADE OF THE DIFFERENT RATES BETWEEN 1963 AND 1971 AND SOME CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN AS TO THE PRESENT STATE OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS IN CANADA.
