Abstract
This manual from the United States Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration is the second volume in the Cannabis Youth Treatment Series. This volume presents a seven-session cognitive behavioral treatment approach designed for use with adolescent cannabis users. Providing descriptions of and instructions and exercises for sessions 6 through 12 of the cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for adolescent marijuana users, this manual is intended as a supplement to volume one, in which a five-session CBT approach is presented. After presenting the central objective of CBT7 as abstinence from marijuana usage, the authors present CBT7’s treatment model and an overview of the sessions from both CBT5, from volume one, and CBT7. Arguing that CBT7 is designed to help adolescent marijuana users problem solve, manage their emotions, communicate, and prevent relapses, the authors argue that CBT7 treatment is tailored to individual clients. After briefly describing CBT7 treatment session components, this manual details each of the sessions 6 through 12, in CBT7. Focusing on problem solving, anger awareness and management, effective communication, coping with marijuana cravings, depression management, and managing thoughts about marijuana, each session is described in detail within this manual. Each session is broken into several components including an overview, procedures and skills, group exercises, reminder sheets, therapists’ feedback, group members’ feedback, practice exercises, and references and resources. A glossary of terms, an extensive reference list, and a series of appendices presenting session posters, therapist and supervisory forms, and a clinical trial of outpatient treatments complete this manual.
