To reduce the current recidivism rate of 28.4 percent for the United States prison population of 450,000, the implementation of a relevant, comprehensive vocational and career readiness program is necessary.
Abstract
Career readiness programs provide inmates with current job-securing skills. Researchers have found that businesses recommend such programs, and inmates who participate in them obtain jobs more quickly and maintain jobs more securely than nonparticipants. Components of the career readiness package address areas related to social skills, job acquisition skills, work performance skills, and basic day-to-day 'survival' skills. Redirected and revised curriculum for vocational training programs may be the answer to recidivism reduction and society's economic concerns regarding correctional institutions in the United States.
