EXAMINES SOCIOECONOMIC AND EDUCATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF INCARCERATED JUVENILE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THE PURPOSES OF THIS STUDY WERE TO (A) IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE THE GENERAL SOCIO-ECONOMIC-EDUCATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD RESIDENT OF PITTSBURGH WHO WAS COMMITTED TO A CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION BY THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY JUVENILE COURT IN 1966, (B) TO IDENTIFY, IF POSSIBLE, APPARENT CLASSROOM INDICATORS OF PRE-DELINQUENCY, AND (C) TO DRAW IMPLICATIONS CONCERNING THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL IN REGARD TO EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF PRE-DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR. THIS STUDY WAS FOCUSED ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CHILD AS IT RELATED TO THE FIRST SIX GRADES IN SCHOOL. MOST OF THESE YEARS WERE PRE-DELINQUENCY YEARS, ACCORDING TO THE COURT RECORDS. ALTHOUGH THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM THE EDUCATIONAL FACTORS IN THIS STUDY, SINCE ONE APPEARS TO GREATLY INFLUENCE THE OTHER, AN EXAMINATION OF EACH IS PRESENTED.
