THE RESULTS OF A STUDY TO INVESTIGATE WHAT JUVENILE DELINQUENTS AND NON-DELINQUENTS PERCEIVE AS CAUSES OF DELINQUENCY, TO DETERMINE THE VALIDITY OF THOSE PERCEPTIONS, AND TO FORMULATE PREVENTIVE REMEDIES.
Abstract
THE SAMPLE INCLUDED 216 NONDELINQUENT MALES FROM TWO MUNICIPALITIES IN THE SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA METROPOLITAN AREA AND 50 MALE JUVENILE RECIDIVISTS COMMITTED TO A STATE CORRECTIVE INSTITUTION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. THE GROUPS WERE ADMINISTERED A QUESTIONNAIRE DEALING WITH DELINQUENCY AND ASKED TO WRITE WHAT THEY FELT WERE THE THREE MOST PREVALENT REASONS FOR JUVENILES GETTING INTO TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE. THE FINDINGS SHOW THAT THE THREE GROUPS STUDIED SHOW A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AGREEMENT ON THE SUBSTANCE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE CAUSES OF JUVENILE CRIME.
