A HISTORY OF THE CENTER FOR CORRECTIONAL GUIDANCE IS PRESENTED, AND DESCRIPTION ARE PROVIDED OF THE INMATE GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES SET UP IN SEVERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WITH GUIDANCE FROM THE CENTER.

Abstract

THE CENTER FOR CORRECTIONAL JUSTICE WAS FOUNDED IN 1971 BY A GROUP OF LAWYERS, CORRECTIONAL OFFICIALS, AND EX-OFFENDERS IN RESPONSE TO THE PRESSING NEED FOR PEACEFUL, NON-JUDICIAL METHODS OF RESOLVING GRIEVANCES OF PEOPLE COMMITTED TO CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES. THE GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES SET UP BY THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY AND THE MASSACHUSETTS CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AT CONCORD ARE REVIEWED. THE CENTER ALSO CONDUCTED AN EVALUATION OF THE GRIEVANCE AND DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES OF THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION AND CORRECTION, AND HAS EVALUATED NEW PROCEDURES AT SEVERAL OTHER CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES. REVIEWS OF GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS HAVE ALSO BEEN UNDERTAKEN.
