The mission of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) at the University of Colorado is to build an interdisciplinary foundation for understanding and preventing violence over the life course.
Abstract
The Center's mission was articulated in response to the need for adequate research on violence causes and violence prevention, the absence of a fully integrated database and organizational means to evaluate and disseminate credible knowledge, and the importance of determining whether violence prevention efforts are hampered by insufficient resources and inaccessible technical skills. Components of the CSPV include the Information House, technical assistance services, and empirical research. The Information House maintains data bases and reference materials on violence-related research and makes these available to the public. Further, the CSPV has identified nationally known experts to write state-of-the-art critical reviews of research on selected topics, including violence as a public health problem for children and youth, guns and violence, developmental aspects of violence, the link between school violence and neighborhood and family conditions, school-based violence prevention programs, and community approaches to violence prevention. The CSPV provides technical assistance to violence prevention practitioners and maintains a basic empirical research function. Current research projects and proposals of the CSPV are noted.
