Male correctional personnel at four correctional facilities of differing types were surveyed concerning their attitudes, including their attitudes toward working with women as correctional officers.
Abstract
The participants were 178 personnel at four State prisons, including a women's prison, a reception center, a minimum-security facility, and a maximum-security prison. The results were analyzed using a stepwise multiple regression procedure. Results revealed that several variables were significantly related to positive attitudes toward women. These variables included the quality of the working relationship with female officers, job satisfaction, custody orientation, educational level, and prison type. However, no significant relationships were found between a pro-women correctional officer attitude and the race, marital status, length of service, security level, rank, stress, or age of the male respondents.
