Every luxury hotel should establish a highly trained and cohesive emergency response team (ERT) to deal with accidents and other unexpected events that create the need for medical attention.
Abstract
The ERT provides guests with what they expect and deserve and protects the hotel from liability claims and rising an insurance rates. People chosen for an ERT have other jobs in the hotel. They are usually selected for the ERT for their knowledge of the building, understanding of how the mechanics of the building operate, authority within the corporate structure, specialized training, ability to make sound decisions during stressful situations, ability to communicate effectively and react quickly, and ease of notification. Usually security officers, engineers, maintenance personnel, and front-office managers, they should carry two-way radios or remote paging devices. They should be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. They must also learn emergency rescue and understand the mechanics of fire and smoke and their dangers. They must also learn when and how to make an arrest. To learn these and other procedures, training sessions that involve simulations are useful.
