Abstract
This book was compiled from the work of The Chemical People, a two-part school-age drug and alcohol abuse series presented on PBS in 1982. The series grew from the work of The Chemical People, a program specifically aimed to combating school-age drug and alcohol abuse in western Pennsylvania. With the support of First Lady Nancy Reagan and several non-profit foundations, the program was changed to meet the needs of a national audience. This book contains discussion about the project, the problem of school-age drug and alcohol abuse, and transcripts from the actual program presented on PBS. The 14 chapters in the book include: 1) Words from Participants; 2) The Story of The Chemical People; 3) Parenting of the Chemical Abusing Child; 4) The Chemical People in Your School; 5) Task Forces and the Wall of Denial; 6) Organizing Town Meetings; 7) Organizing Task Forces; 8) Photographs; 9) National Town Meeting Update; 10) National Response; 11) Transcript of "The Chemical Society"; 12) Transcript of "Community Answers"; 13) Participating Organizations; and 14) Informational Resources.
