This is a 1999 update of a comprehensive State-by-State compilation of data on troubled children and families.
Abstract
The first chapter contains data on child abuse and neglect for each State. The data shows the number of children reported as abused and neglected and referred for investigation during the period 1990-96; children with substantiated or indicated reports of abuse and neglect in 1996; and the race/ethnicity, gender, and ages of children substantiated or indicated as abused and neglected in 1996. Data is broken down for those physically abused, sexually abused, and neglected in 1996. Data are also provided on children removed from their homes in 1996. Chapter 2 focuses on child abuse fatalities in 1996. The race/ethnicity, ages, gender, and victim relationship with the alleged perpetrator are reported. Chapter 3 contains data on children in out-of-home care for 1990-1996. These data encompass that demographics of the children, types of out-of-home care, the median number of months spent in out-of-home care, Federal foster care expenditure, licensed foster homes, and Federal independent living payments under Title IV-E for 1996. Remaining chapters provide data on adoption, finance and administration, family preservation and family support services, and risk factors (children in poverty). 57 references and extensive figures and tables
