Although firmly established as a major social issue, child abuse still tends to be too narrowly studied in Britain.
Abstract
The dominant social administration approach to welfare in Britain focuses almost exclusively on domestic forms of child abuse, deflecting attention from the more pervasive disadvantages and deprivations which millions of children experience in an oppressive socioeconomic system. Numerous studies show that working-class children are likely to have poor physical health at birth; to reside in poorly serviced and overcrowded housing; to be undernourished and inadequately clothed; and to be dependent on inadequate education, health, and personal social services. Given that treatment programs for abusive parents are endlessly debated in professional and public circles, it is not too much to ask for an equivalent amount of attention to the societal abuse of children. 59 references.
