REPORT ON A STUDY TESTING FOUR MAJOR HYPOTHESES CONCERNING THE CAREERS OF 181 PERSONS CONVICTED OF SEX OFFENSES AGAINST CHILDREN.
Abstract
THE SAMPLE WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE CATEGORIES OF INTERACTION ACCORDING TO THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE OFFENDER'S LIFE PATTERN INVOLVED CHILDREN. THESE THREE GROUPS DIFFERED SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE AMOUNT OF COERCION USED IN THE CHILD MOLESTING, THE CONTEXT OF THE OFFENSE ENCOUNTER, AND THE FORM OF SEXUAL CONTACT. VERBALIZED MOTIVES WERE ALSO STUDIED IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR RELATION TO OFFENSES, SOCIETAL REACTIONS, AND THE MOTIVES OFFENDERS ATTRIBUTED TO OTHERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
