HIGHLIGHTS AND PROCEDURES FOR A BAR ASSOCIATION SPONSORSHIP OF A SCHOOL PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS TO ACQUAINT THEM WITH THE ROLE OF LAW IN SOCIETY AND HOW THE LAW AFFECTS CHILDREN.
Abstract
THE GUIDELINES AND METHODS OUTLINED IN THIS BOOKLET ARE BASED ON THE EXPERIENCES OF THE ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA PROGRAM, 'CHILDREN AND THE LAW.' A PANEL OF VOLUNTEERS, CONSISTING OF AN ATTORNEY OR JUDGE, A POLICEMAN, AND A LAYMAN, COMES TO THE CLASSROOM. EACH MEMBER MAKES A BRIEF STATEMENT ON HIS ROLE IN MAKING AND ENFORCING LAWS AND THEN THE STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ASK QUESTIONS. A BOOKLET IS DISTRIBUTED TO ALL STUDENTS, AND THERE IS SIX PROGRAM TELEVISION SERIES WHICH CAN BE SHOWN IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PROGRAM. IN ADDITION TO OUTLINING THESE COMPONENTS, THE BOOKLET DEALS WITH ORGANIZING THE BAR ASSOCIATION, CONTACTING THE SCHOOL, AND ARRANGING THE COOPERATION OF POLICE, COMMUNITY LEADERS, AND THE MEDIA.
