This analysis of the impacts of wife assault on the children considers the effects of a violent home situation on child development and functioning and on children's views of violence and details strategies for intervention and prevention.
Abstract
The discussion also focuses on methods of assessing children and families; barriers to the identification of the children; and the roles of institutions and services such as shelters, the courts, and the schools. The text also describes interview strategies to use with children living with violent fathers, intervention planning for child witnesses to wife assault, potential future services, and the role of prevention programs. The strategies presented are based on the model developed by the authors in Ontario, Canada and emphasize the importance of helping children know that they are not alone in coping with the trauma.
