A FIVE-PART FILMSTRIP/TAPE SET INTENDED TO AID PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS IN UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT, RECOGNIZING ITS SYMPTOMS, AND HELPING BOTH THE CHILD VICTIM AND HIS PARENTS.
Abstract
'ABUSE AND NEGLECT' IS A DISEASE INFLICTED BY INCREASING NUMBERS OF PARENTS ON THEIR CHILDREN. IT INCLUDES PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL NEGLECT, SEXUAL ABUSE, AND OTHER CONDITIONS WHICH THREATEN THE CHILD'S HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT. THIS SERIES OF FILMSTRIPS PROVIDES A BALANCED OVERVIEW OF THIS PROBLEM, EMPHASIZING THAT CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT CALL FOR THE TREATMENT OF BOTH THE CHILD AND THE PARENT. THE SOCIAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL PRESSURES WHICH MAY LEAD AN ADULT TO ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR ARE DESCRIBED, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PARENT/CHILD INTERACTION IN THE CHILD'S FORMATIVE YEARS IS OUTLINED. SYMPTOMS OF CHILD ABUSE WHICH MAY ALLOW TEACHERS, PROFESSIONALS, OR OTHER ADULTS TO RECOGNIZE ITS OCCURRENCE ARE ALSO EXAMINED.
