Security managers with an unusually heavy workload or a highly specialized problem may sometimes find themselves in need of help from a consultant.
Abstract
A security consultant is an independent, nonproduct-affiliated individual who engages in security management consultation and preventive, training, technical, or forensic consultation on security matters. Many consultants specialize in one area such as universities, access system design, or expert testimony. To expand their capabilities, such consultants may have specialists on their staff or as subcontractors. In choosing a consultant, consideration should be given to his or her qualifications, commerical and professional affiliations, and educational background. Once a consultant is selected, he or she should be interviewed, the project and fees should be discussed, and a contract should be negotiated. Once the consultant arrives, he or she should be provided with an office and phone and necessary supplies and should be introduced to staff. Necessary information should be provided concisely to save the consultant's time and the company's money.
