Abstract
The statistical report provides a data summary of inmates committed, released, and incarcerated by the department. Data were compiled from both manual and computerized data. The purpose of the report is to provide a historical record of inmate demographics, to provide management with offender data necessary to ensure effective operations, and to provide the public with yearly statistical characteristics of the inmate population. Department court commitments totaled 1,245 for the fiscal year, compared with 1,354 for fiscal year 1976-77. Indeterminate sentences accounted for 33 percent of new admissions, and 67 percent received determinate sentences. In 1971-72, the comparable figures were 53 percent and 47 percent, respectively. According to offense categories, 483 new admissions were for violent offenses; 625 were for property crime; 86 were for public health, safety, and morals violations; 20 were for offenses against the State; and 31 were committed for miscellaneous crimes, including 13 under the habitual offender statute. Given during the year were 1,245 single sentences and 472 concurrent sentences and 54 sentences were designated consecutive. With regard to offender age at commitment, 36.1 percent were between the ages of 20 and 24, 21.4 percent were between the ages of 25 and 29, and 13 percent were 30 to 34 years of age. Tables constitute the statistical report.
