PROPOSED AUTOMATED VEHICLE TRACKING SYSTEM CAPABLE OF TRACING A POLICE CAR'S PATH ON A VIDEO SCREEN AND TRANSMITTING MESSAGES BY A BUTTON CONTROL PANEL.
Abstract
FLAIR, AN ACRONYM FOR FLEET LOCATION AND INFORMATION REPORTING, IS CONTRACTED FOR INSTALLATION IN WICHITA POLICE VEHICLES BY JULY 1974. A DEVICE INSTALLED IN A PATROL CAR WILL TRANSMIT A SIGNAL WHICH APPEARS AS A LIGHTED DOT ON A VIDEO DISPLAY MAP AT THE DISPATCHER'S CONSOLE. THIS SCREEN CAN SHOW THE WHOLE DISTRICT, OR FOCUS ON A FEW BLOCKS. IN ADDITION, AN OFFICER CAN TRANSMIT ONE OF NINETY-NINE MESSAGES THROUGH A TEN CODE PANEL WITHOUT VOICE CONTACT WITH THE DISPATCHER. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD IMPROVE VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT AND ASSIGNMENT, AND INCREASE POLICE SAFETY THROUGH A PROVISION FOR EMERGENCY SIGNALING. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
