The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice of the United Nations Economic and Social Council presents a report on its 21st session, held December 13, 2011, and April 23-27, 2012.
Abstract
The issues and actions addressed in the session included matters calling for action by the Economic and Social Council or brought to its attention; strategic management, budgetary, and administrative issues; discussion of the theme, "violence against migrants, migrant workers, and their families;" integration and coordination of efforts by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and member states in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice; and world crime trends and emerging issues and responses in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The meeting also addressed the follow-up to the 12th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal justice and preparations for the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice; use and application of United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice; provisional agenda for the 22nd session of the Commission; adoption of the report of the Commission on its 21st session; and organization of the session. There were four matters calling for action by the Economic and Social Council. One matter was the standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners. A second matter was the strengthening of the rule of law and the reform of criminal justice institutions, particularly in the areas related to the United Nations system-wide approach to fighting transnational organized crime and drug trafficking. A third issue addressed in the session was the draft decisions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council; and a fourth issue involved matters brought to the attention of the Economic and Social Council.
