This article discusses a handheld software application that is part of a fully integrated mobile data system.
Abstract
PocketBlue is a handheld device that provides secure messaging and alarm capabilities connected to all mobile users. It is a spinoff of an earlier device, PacketCluster, which enabled officers in vehicles to use their laptop to access data rather than contacting dispatchers via the radio. Officers could also communicate with each other without unwanted listeners having access to the messages. PocketBlue gives out-of-vehicle mobile users comparable access to information and communication capabilities. Personnel on foot, bicycle, or horseback can simply tap a button on the Palm hand-held device to query the National Crime Information Center, the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, and the Department of Motor Vehicles databases or send secure messages. PacketCluster is in use all over the United States, but currently only the St. Paul, Minnesota, Police Department has purchased PocketBlue. Six States are doing beta testing on PocketBlue, and the manufacturer is aggressively working to accommodate as many interested agencies as it can.
